The Cosmos were founded in 1971 by brothers Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun and Warner Brothers President Steve Ross. The Cosmos played home matches in three stadiums around New York. The Yankee Stadium, Hofstra Stadium before moving in 1977 to the Giants Stadium where they remained. Cosmos competed in the North American Soccer League until 1984 and was the strongest franchise in the league, backed by Warner Communications which enabled them to sign international superstars such as the Legendary Pele. It was in 1975 that the Cosmos signed Brazilian star Pele, whom they had attempted to sign since the Cosmos was created. Pele joined in 1975 on a salary of $1.4 million per year, an enormous wage for that time, equal to about $6 million in 2011. They also signed former Brazil captain Carlos Alberto as well as World Cup winning german Franz Beckenbauer. These signings made the Cosmos into the most glamorous team in World football.
After the retirement of Pele, much of the progress that American soccer had made during his stay was lost. The appeal of the Cosmos declined, resulting in their withdrawal from competition and the team was dissolved in 1984. Since the original New York Cosmos stopped competing in 1985, there have been many attempts to revive it during the 1990s and 2000s. The New York Cosmos, led by their Honorary President Pele, announced in August 2010 that they would reform representing the metropolitan New York. Pele confirmed their ambition to become a franchise of Major League Soccer. Former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona was added as Director of Soccer alongside former United States player Cobi Jones, who became Associate Director of Soccer. The original Cosmos top goalscorer, Giorgio Chinaglia, was also included as an international ambassador.
